The plain-English definition
'Dishwasher safe' means the manufacturer has tested the item and confirmed it can go through a normal dishwasher cycle — the hot water (up to about 140–160°F), the high-pressure spray, and the alkaline detergent — without warping, cracking, fading, corroding, or losing its coating. It is a durability promise, not a cleaning claim: it tells you the machine won't ruin the item, not that the item cleans better in the machine.
Crucially, 'dishwasher safe' is not the same as 'unbreakable' or 'lasts forever.' Many items survive the dishwasher but wear faster there than at the sink — nonstick coatings, printed graphics, and powder-coated finishes are common examples. So the honest reading is: safe to machine wash, but hand washing is often still gentler.
The dishwasher-safe symbol
The universal symbol is a small square box showing a plate or glass with water droplets (or diagonal lines) falling on them — usually stamped or molded into the bottom of the item. If you see it, the item is rated for the machine. Some versions show plates in a rack with water above; the meaning is the same.
A crossed-out version — the same dish-and-water icon with a line through it, or the plate shown outside the box — means hand wash only. Take it seriously: it signals the dishwasher will genuinely degrade the item. If there's no symbol at all, the item is unlabeled, not automatically safe; check the manufacturer's site or default to hand washing.
What 'top rack only' means
'Top rack safe' or 'top rack only' means the item can go in the dishwasher, but only on the upper shelf — because the heating element sits in the bottom of most dishwashers, and the lower rack gets significantly hotter. Plastics, thin metals, and insulated bottles get this label because bottom-rack heat can warp or damage them while the top rack is gentle enough.

Symbols you might confuse it with
A few other kitchen symbols look similar. The microwave-safe symbol shows a dish with wavy radiation lines (no water droplets). The freezer-safe symbol is a snowflake. The oven-safe symbol shows a dish inside an oven outline with a temperature. None of these imply dishwasher safety — an item can be microwave safe but hand-wash only, or oven safe but not dishwasher safe.
